About The Artwork

Bin Laden was no martyr; he was a pariah. He was murdered as an act of revenge and delivered to the American people on a silver platter, or a silver shopping-cart. His posture mimics that of Marat, or the dead Christ of the Pietà. Bin Laden is laid in a Walmart shopping cart, which for me is a symbol of consumerism and the world’s growing globalization. On the handrail is written “everything for less” and on the seat cover, “for your safety.” The silvering of the cart references both the martyrdom of John the Baptist and his head on a silver platter and the bounty of 30 silver pieces delivered to Judas on the betrayal of Jesus. The silvering and the camouflage robe draped over the figure are references to a time passed and previous ties between the United States and Bin Laden. My intent was to recreate the beauty and drama of The Death of Marat. The material qualities of the sculpted glass; the satin, silvered cart; and the glossy, plasticized fabric is meant to contrast the lifeless body of this polarizing individual. When lit properly, Bin Laden glows in the same hallowing light as Marat. Though, while Davide idealizes Marat and presents him as a martyr of the revolution, Sale of a Deathman, presents bin Laden as a method for reflection, a way of seeing ourselves through the eyes of our enemies.
