Coming from tropical rainforest country in Malaysia, Sherine Tan has been passionate about craftsmanship, painting and knitting all her life. Her postgraduate studies, a Masters from UNSW Art & Design, (formerly COFA), preceded a decade employed in advertising, digital and multimedia, which launched her career in Sydney. While at work, she found herself enthralled by origami, practicing it as meditation or for fun. One day, her colleague saw her use a square sheet of paper to fold into a whale. He thought it was impossible, but when you believe you can do something, it just happens. "It always seems impossible until it's done." - Nelson Mandela Sherine went on to invent her own technique of intricately manipulating a flat sheet of paper into a 3D sculpture, in a way that was simple and easy, and which anyone could follow. Her aim is to transform a sheet of paper into a geometrically abstract and architecturally figurative sculpture, one that holds a meaning and offers maximum visual impact. "It's all about what a bit of folding can do to a square sheet of paper." "The inspiration for her paper art, is her deep consternation about animal species which vitally need our care. She aims to visually enlighten us, by transforming an ordinary piece of paper into an extraordinary piece of art."
