Scape #1, "...she who makes the moon the moon" Sculpture

Growing up during a war, the power was out frequently and candles were an almost daily necessity. The world of dim light and shadows was endlessly fascinating to me as a child, as was the opportunity to play and experiment with candles and melted wax. I remember dripping the wax from a candle into a cup of water sitting by my bed. After waiting for the wax to dry, I flipped the small disc over and was excited by the resulting texture of small dimples. It took over thirty years to come back to this idea, but the process is still as playful and the results as surprising and exciting. Works in this ongoing series are created by casting wax into water. The pieces capture an action and freeze it in time. As in many of my works, the process has a substantial element of unpredictability. The final result, textures resembling cooled lava or the surface of some distant planet, is revealed only after the work is completed.
