Sculpture, Fiberglass on Plastic
Size: 19.7 W x 27.6 H x 11 D in
Reinterpretation of one of the most celebrated sculptures of antiquity, Nike of Samothrace, parts of her recognisable and much admired figure is invasively transformed - her glorious and powerful wings seem to have lost their feathers and reveal the shape of a comaratively atrophic chicken wings, which might have acquired through continuous poultry consumption. Her breasts, symbol of fertility and female perfection, have been surgically removed, leaving only two scars to allude to their previous existence. The victorious sculpture bears the stich line of a mastectomy operation and is now titled "scars & scares", suggesting the physical and the emotional upheaval that such an invasive procedure can have on a female body.
