About The Artwork
The Cut Outs are what is left over. The negative that is removed in order to create the positive. In order to create a building, we not only construct floors, walls and windows - we also construct large amounts of temporary structures - like scaffolding, formwork and shoring. All these structures and objects are then later disassembled or discarded when they have fulfilled their purpose. These left over pieces of timber, steel and concrete which are removed and then often thrown into skip bins have all kinds of interesting shapes and forms. Often, these shapes are more interesting the final built structure itself! When on building sites, I find myself drawn to these objects. These steel sculptures reference some of the wonderful shapes that I find.
