About The Artwork

Inspired by his "Seeds, Steeds, and Beautiful Weeds" exhibition at Ladew Topiary Gardens in 2016, Matthew Harris has created a series of life-sized horse sculptures. To this date, a total of six horse sculptures have been created in this series. The first four were acquired for private residences, while #5 & #6 are available for private or public sale. Matthew Harris named these two sculptures "Singapore Song" and "Jetlagger" after a recent trip to Singapore where he was inspired by the amazing art and architecture throughout the city. His desire was to capture the spirit and beauty of the horse, but in a very abstract way. Matthew spent many hours studying the nature and form of the horse on local farms in Maryland, home of the "Maryland 5 Star" and "Fair Hill International". His goal was to also integrate the landscape environment that surrounds the piece by allowing the viewer to see through the work. The mind has a powerful ability to solve problems and fill in blank spaces. This sculpture gives an opportunity for the viewer to engage in both seeing the beauty of the piece as well as through it.

He served a traditional 4 year apprenticeship with Master blacksmith Alphonsus Moolenshot, who was born and trained in the Netherlands. After completing his apprenticeship with Mr. Moolenschot in 2000, Matthew went on to work in several architectural metalwork and industrial forging shops. He also studied art and business at Cecil College. Since 2005 he has owned, and operated Matthew Harris Studio located in Perryville, MD. Matthew oversees the design, fabrication, and installation of all the custom fencing, gates, sculptures, and metalwork that the studio creates. His specialty is hot forging one of a kind forms, textures, and elements. He has built a unique and impressive mix of industrial forging equipment and cranes to accomplish this work. His work is found in many businesses, homes, and public spaces. "Life is a collation of patterns, rhythm, and movement of form, light, texture, and elements. I forge and shape metal in an effort to capture the fleeting beauty of these experiences. The permanency of the material affords me the luxury to sculpt statements that will outlast me in time, surrounded by the very elements that inspired their creation." -MH
