About The Artwork

Art as a safe place to remember things you never want to forget. A small personal wooden art-cabinet to store valuable memories From 2015 Monique makes ’Art to remember’, wooden art-objects in different sizes, to store small things that remind you of moments you never want to forget. For yourself or to give to someone else on a very special occasion. Ment for everybody, adults or children and unique for they are all different. The objects all tell their own little story and they invite you to add your own story. When you look at them you see impressions of nature, traces and footprints, travelling roads, rivers and boats, blue sky and white clouds, small houses and so on. This little cabinet has a hole in the bottom where you can put in your small treasures. This can be anything. The blacksmith in my own small village made a stainless steel cylinder with a cover that you can put in the hole. He also made a nice metal disc to close the hole. The small cabinet is painted outside with a lot of care. In this case with oilpaint, the houses are painted with beewax and pigments. They are made of wood I found near the river.

Monique van Stokkum (1952) is a Dutch artist. Currently she makes drawings. THE DELICATE LINE Since 2015 I make drawings again. In the beginning of my artist careeer I started with drawing (ca. 1975), then a period of painting followed . And now I'm back to my old love. The directness, grim, tenderness and strength of the drawing. THEME Of course I am touched by what is happening in the world. In my work I do not react literally on the world news. Yet it is about universal themes in which people can recognize themselves. The viewer looks for elements of life. My work gets meaning through their associations and fantasies. Landscapes, animals and people are my sources of inspiration. Not strange for someone who is born and raised in the woods. I can now say that the death of my son (2005) brought about major changes in my work. Now, after more than 10 years, I feel the space again which was not there for a long time. Since 2013 I make my Objects to Remember. Large and small painted objects in wich memories may be stored. Works of art with an extra personal significance.
