About The Artwork

Recently I have been turning historical paintings into sculptural assemblages such as this work, taken from Picasso painting titled 'Three Musicians' made in 1921. For a video on the making of this work, please visit my instagram page @richgraham_art. I start by breaking down each individual shape in a picture, and then join them back together as a giant jigsaw, using materials and hand crafted processes, that did not exist when the painting was originally made. I hope the end product combines the modern and the old to characterise something about the present day. Beyond this, what is important to me is the process of making. The physicality of making by hand, and thinking through making is central to my work. I am not wedded to the idea of an artist ‘signature style’ or one designated medium. For me, reusing images from the past as a base to build up a new work is not only a way to play with and contemplate ideas throughout history of art, but also part of my quest for creative freedom. Remaking master pictures in a new way, is a way of meditating on the ideas within them, and perhaps an expression of how all forms of art and creativity are derivative. As Hans Ulrich Obrist recently quoted the art historian Erwin Panofsk ‘The world of tomorrow is made out of fragments of the past’. By adding a new meaning to old paintings, not only preserves and revitalises them in our collective psyche, but also widens the gap in making them more tangible to a wider audience of modern collectors, especially for people who are interested to collect something beyond a printed version, of a painting they love.

Hello, I am British artist born in 1982, through my paintings, illustrations and sculptures, I am always making a visual narrative, exploring ideas on transformation, identity and our relationship to nature. Once I find an image or an object with the potential to make a character or express an idea, I start making a story, making drawings to bring the work to life, developing its creative journey. I like to think I am learning about myself when I make things - thinking through making. An example of this process is an oversized caterpillar assemblage I made from old piano parts, which later became the foundation for an illustrated story 'The Cranky Caterpillar', published by Thames and Hudson last year. I won the ‘State of the Art’ drawing competition at the Royal College of Art back in 2009, and have since exhibited at Phillips De Pury auction house, alongside group and solo exhibitions. I also have artworks in the Paul and Ellen Josewitz collection, as well as several public hospital collections. Most recently I have been working on a series of paintings as well as an illustrated art book titled ‘Mr Make & the Lemonade Lady’.
