About The Artwork

The sculpture "STEEL FLOWER" draws on the knowledge acquired through my ship-building in years past together with drawing and abstract forms. The works are crafted from 5-10 cm thick ship-building steel plate Steel flowers The hiss of hot gas jets and incandescent slag transport the blacksmith to grounds familiar from a previous life to extract these flowers from the Akureyri Slipway. A place where he once built ships, mixing gas and oxygen in a fire which cut steel like bread, and now is his flowerbed. He still fires up the steel but now plays with it like a poet with words, like wind with straws, breathing life into it. It shall be left untold whence the wind carries the seeds of these flowers, but they do not wither at the first touch of nightfrost. For they are no orchids, no fragrant violets nor southern summer growth. The flowers are not cut out to adorn button holes on special days. No, they grow from the sweat of the brow and toil of a ship-builder who long ago laid aside the slag hammer and welding helmet. They are deeply rooted in one man’s struggle for existence.
