About The Artwork
As an abstract figurative sculptor one of my favorite activities is people watching. Some folks might consider this just a pleasant pastime. But I (and my tax accountant) call it research. I’ve spent hours at a time just watching people sitting, standing, and moving. I’m fascinated by the way people occupy and move through space. Contemporary dance is also an important source of inspiration for me. Watching performers complete dance moves (improbable for most of us) takes me outside my familiar sense of possibility. Whether it’s in a casual or performative way, the way people occupy space provides important points of reference for my compositions. They can provide compelling metaphors for how we move through our lives. Recently I’ve been exploring the idea of what it means to hold one’s center in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. “Comedy of Struggle IV” is from the series of works about that idea.
