Surrender, 34” tall, the sculpture is about relationships, life, love, and death of loved ones and the ultimate need of letting go of those close to us. The nakedness of the two forms is symbolic of the vulnerability we feel when confronted with events out of our control. I wanted to express the anguish and torment felt when faced with the type of loss that resists death’s final grasp of loved ones. The enveloping roots coming from the earth and wrapping around and turning into their bodies is representative of the final stage of our bodies returning to earth thru the cycle of life. Surrender's first impression is of two people dancing, but viewers enjoy the surprise that it is about something much more. We all can deeply empathize with the expressed loss, regrets and longing, which resonate within each of our life experiences. Others have seen the work as a Holocaust sculpture...of the persistence and struggle of the human spirit. On another level, I also view this as an uplifting piece, as the figures, one helping to hold and lift up another, struggle to rise from the ground to move upward and beyond their entanglements and despair.

I am originally from Indianapolis, but our family moved to South Bend during my grade school years, and later graduated from Clay High in 1982. I worked as a staff photographer for the South Bend Tribune right out of high school, and then later attended the Portfolio Center of Atlanta Georgia. After art school I worked in the commercial photography field for 6 years, then went back to school in 1988 and graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1992. I started my sculpture business in Indianapolis 19 years ago. I am a full time artist and a single dad with a 7-year-old rambunctious boy. I enjoy creating site-specific one-of-a-kind sculptures for my clients. I work in all metals, wood, stone, fiber-resin, and specialize in bronze through the lost wax technique. My sculptures are motivated by my own life experiences and sometimes shared world events. I strive to capture that moment that has the breath of life and tension in it. Through the figurative form I seek to convey grace, passion, and simplistic beauty. More importantly, I am interested in capturing and expressing emotion through the abstract form.
