About The Artwork

Swimming Otter, hand carved from birch plywood. This hand carved birch plywood otter is meticulously designed to fully exploit the beauty of plywood. Bill considers his plywood sculptures very carefully to make the most of this interesting material. It is a complex process to carve a piece from plywood. It takes a level of time and skill to create the correct design, work out the shape and then cut the layers of the plywood. “I have spent many hours studying otters in Scotland and they are still one of my favourite subjects for sculpture. Here I have tried to capture the beauty and fluidity of the otters’ movement in water whilst using the contemporary medium of plywood. When using plywood, the shape and design of the piece is very important.”

I live and work in Kent, in the UK and have been a full time sculptor for over 20 years. My first career was working with animals, and this still has a large impact on my life and work. I spend quite a lot of time carefully selecting the medium for my sculptures that will best produce the effect I want to achieve. Maybe this is by the use of the figuring in the grain of a unique piece of timber, or perhaps by utilising the striking effect achieved with the contemporary medium of plywood. Sometimes the smooth effect of bronze is the best way to portray an idea. I am self-taught, although I have spent much time talking with and exchanging information with carvers and artists from all over the world. My works are also produced in limited edition bronze and silver. I am a professional member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (part of the Federation of British Artists).
