About The Artwork

3-D mosaic of mainly turquoise mirrored glass chips, swarovski crystals, millefiori pieces, mother of pearls on turquoise mortar on mdf board. The meteor is surrounded by a white border and set in a black wooden frame with glass. sizes: 4.7x4.7.1.3 frame 9.8x9.8x2 (cm12x12x3,5 frame: cm25x25x5) The colorful mirrored glass always reflects light in different ways depending on the viewer’s movement and on the changing of the environmental light. In my art this interaction between the artwork and the viewer contributes to creating not only reflections, movement and constant perception of the artwork, but also lightness in the sense of absence of weight. Light and lightness are constant essential elements in my all artwork. I started creating meteors in 2010 and since then they have been a recurrent theme in my artwork. Meteors, with their bright light in the darkness and with their quick falling movement, remind me of those instants in which we can perceive, or we have the illusion of perceiving, a sense of revealed mystery.

www.isabellatonini.com Born in Florence, Italy, I live in Bologna where I graduated in literature and later completed a masters in children’s literature and illustration. Mainly a self-taught artist, I have attended some artists’ studios to master some artistic techniques, especially mosaic workshops in Ravenna. While practising mosaic technique for home decor objects over the last fifteen years, I have started some personal artistic and aesthetic research which has led me to express myself in artistic work. The most evident characteristic of my works of art is the way in which they continuously reflect light. The use of small colorful mirrored glass tiles, individually hand cut and positioned, creates an effect of continuously changing reflections, depending on the light, the movement and the position from which you view the work, constantly catching your attention. Even when it is dark a dim light is enough to make them shine and reveal their message. Apart from the interaction with light, this work expresses my intention to give mosaic a less heavy feel, making it lighter, creating “glass-writing” and “light-reflecting patterns”, but also mobiles and images of meteors and more recently applying the bright reflective colorful tiles to photographs taken myself and printed on canvas. I believe in aesthetic values and I hope my artwork will provoke a positive feeling in the viewers.
