About The Artwork

This piece was inspired by watching Mother Nature at work in my garden. An unfortunate moth was caught in a web and the large spider was enfolding it in gossamer threads. It was early in the morning and the dew was glistening on the structure of the web. It was an amazing and arresting sight. The occupant had it's trap down to a fine art and was plump with the easy pickings. The spider on my piece was made from cotton wool and paper. The body and legs were painted a shimmering violet with a touch of gold colour. Pink and orange fine grade glitter covers the body while the stripe running the length of the body is red, purple and blue glitter mixed. The eyes are blue glitter. The legs and fangs are covered in shimmering violet and gold paints. The web is covered plastic, paper covered and painted green with a mix of coloured glitters i.e. blue, green, silver, and red. The fabric on the background is dark purple satin finish and on top of this are fragments of a flocked, spider printed voille. These are placed between the sections of the web. This is to denote the frantic scramble of baby spiders, when dinner is on the table. This fabric is outlined in blue and light pink glitters. The butterfly is a found object, hard plastic, covered in paper and orange, red, green, yellow and gold glitter, with four ruby imitation gemstones placed on the tips of the four wings. The dragonfly is the same material as the butterfly and also a found object. It is treated the same way but is covered in a mix of green and blue glitter. Threads binding it, simulating the packaging of the spider's food, is painted a shimmering green colour. This matches the front of the picture frame, which is wood, covered in paper and painted green. There is a line of colour introduced around the frame. Dark pink glitter with blue and silver mixed. The back of the frame is treated the same way, but is painted in a shimmering violet colour, matching the legs and fangs of the spider. This is a freestanding piece.

My name is Deborah Minogue.  I am an Irish Artist.  I create mixed-media/combined materials artworks.   I  use objects that can be re-purposed, as well as new and made components.  I source these objects from Auctions and House Clearances.  The challenge is to create something interesting  from something that was previously of little or no interest.    I am interested in the 'Victorian Gothic' style of literature.  Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein made an impression on me and the series of films, made in the late 1950's by the British Film Company 'Hammer Horror' brought these characters to life. I use paper, paint, textiles, wood, glass, plastic, metal and sparkling glitters. The paints are light reflective and they change appearance when viewed in different lighting.  The glitter looks spectacular under artificial light, while the paints appear metallic.  My pieces are sculptural and usually free-standing.  There is only one of each piece.
