The sculptures by Iris Sageder are medium to life-size representations. The multi-layered glazed colouring lends additional depth to the three-dimensional form. In terms of content, the artist makes use of mysticism and counteracts it by depicting animals, especially the "pre-human" primate. Her themes arise from the tension between the loss of innocence and the ability to understand human existence. Iris Sageder's figures appear strange, suggestive and timeless. Her style permeates figurative symbolism because of their intense physical presence. "We proudly claim to have eaten from the tree of knowledge. This is our essential differentiator from the animal. Part of this idea is that humans are at the top of an evolutionary race. In my work, I try to explore the quality of that edge."
