It was a cold windy day in autumn and there was a flock of birds flying high in the distance. Every so often the sun would send shafts of coloured light from behind the clouds, catching the birds wings so they appeared to flash as they flew. That day the weather was changeable and soon the clouds became heavier and the birds disappeared into them. But then came the rain, great long hard drops of it, and as I ducked my head under my jacket I felt as if it wasn't raindrops hitting me but bits of swooping birds. The storm was caused by the birds, the storm was the birds, the birds were the storm... The "birds" in this abstract narrative mosaic are made using a beautiful black iridescent glass which changes colour in different light. Click the pictures to see how it changes. I also made an animation of this that you can see if you visit my website. The mosaic is made using stained glass on cement board. It is for an indoor space and framed with a black wood frame, it is not suitable for outdoors.

United Kingdom
I am a UK mosaic artist inspired by the strength, structure and colours of nature, especially skies, weather, trees and birds. Many of my mosaics are stories that are similar to ancient myths; looking at the world as a primitive and magical place. Often I plan my work as a sequence, to allow the flow of time and movement and this may lead to a stop-motion mosaic animation, allowing me to experiment and make the story come to life.
