About The Artwork

The Lottery of Figures is a game of chance, something like Bingo. For those who have never played it, I will explain that it uses images instead of numbers. This game goes beyond chance, because its traditional illustrations keep alive the popular cosmogonies of Mesoamerica. The popular game of the Lottery of Figures is part of my memories of childhood. I remember colorfully when my brothers and I were children and felt always happy going to The Fair of the Virgin of Assumption in Guatemala to play the Lottery of Figures. We loved it although the prizes were (and still are) basins, pots, bedpans and other simple domestic and popular things, but we loved the game because we could win things and comeback home with our prizes! These colorful memories, full of joy and tradition, are translucent aspects of my memory that I converted in this art series into crystal resin with elements of each figure that contain not only the signs and symbols of the Lottery of Figures, but also the vivid feeling of each. "The Lottery" is the title of this series of sculptural object art and refers to the moment the game is won. In contrast to Bingo, which is by numbers usually drawn from a tombola, in the Lottery, a small card is chosen at random and the person who directs the game improvises small poems using satire and witty sayings generally referring to current events that allude to the image on the card. "The Loteríazo" is the moment in which the player has full cardboard and wins the game and in my case, this “Loteríazo" is a symbol of my diaphanous memory that I share this way with you and its masculine and feminine concepts.
