About The Artwork

The human form remains a constant in Art History as we are all equally blessed and cursed by our own physical reality. It is an enduring source of inspiration, admiration and despair and the work can embody the most subtle or outlandish emotional content with resonance. My figure is often headless, limbless or without hands, feet or faces. I am absorbed in the essential being with its weight and bulk stripped bare which for me emanates from the torso; our lithe or lumpen selves. Hand plaster casting allows for the most accurate representation of the original maquette. Once lightly polished with natural beeswax, the surface can take on a soft chiaroscuro. This particular piece is after Henry Moore; a homage to the British sculptor of the 20th Century.

Initially working in white earthenware clay or black wax, the maquettes are then transferred into plaster, then sometimes bronze. The sculpture is at once both figurative and abstract, and the subject is always some aspect of the lone human form, be it a torso, a bust or limb. The essential core of the lone human figure, expressed sometimes as a limbless, headless torso with all its weight and bulk is a motif that recurs again and again. It best portrays the significance, isolation and reality of modern existence. These are not idealised images of the heroic or beautiful, but an externalised ‘feeling’ of what lies within; our heavy selves’ JV
