About The Artwork

Udaan I is a sculpture made by using an Organza saree worn by woman from Dayton, Ohio. It shows the flight of this woman who moved from India to Dayton. In this sculpture, I highlight the strength and resilience of the saree fabric used in this sculpture that is deceptively delicate. One can interpret the flight as depicted in Udaan I in a multitude ways, however, I wanted to highlight the strength of a delicate woman and showcase the beauty of her flight under challenging circumstances. Many women all over the world take on challenges and rise to face them with the inner strength that could only come from the sheer will power they possess. Udaan I is a celebration of all those women. It is loosely based on the flight of a butterfly and its strength that mystifies all of us.

I have been a painter all my life! Whether I am expressing my thoughts through science, decorating my home, raising my children, or working in the garden, color is an integral part of my life. I took to oils only recently. My inspiration is my world, my thoughts, desires and expectations. I live life like there is no tomorrow, and I hope you will see that through my paintings. I paint my travels, my abstract thoughts, my gardens and anything that fascinates me. Sometimes, I paint nothing in particular! I am fascinated by color. Growing up, they called me “little bird” because of the bold choices in colors I used to wear. Slowly, I started noticing that even under the most dire circumstances, people all over the world use bold colors in their attire. I always used color to uplift my mood and wondered - could color mend a broken spirit? Could it be a cure for depression? Perhaps color does something positive to our limbic systems and uplifts us. I invite you to enjoy my art collection, called Synesthesia. Synesthesia is the stimulation of one sensory pathway that produces an involuntary effect in a secondary sensory pathway. Could it be that color sparks synesthesia and involuntarily evokes feelings of joy? My name is Hyacinth Paul. I am a retired scientist and college professor, an entrepreneur, author, artist, community volunteer and philanthropist. I am a mother of two beautiful children, and I live in Dayton, OH with my best friend - my husband!
