All of my pieces begin by handbuilding the ceramic bases - the shape that comes about depends on the clay used, the mood of the day, and whether I'm looking to make something rough or refined. With this piece, I was experimenting with a new tube placement - could the argon tube come out of the front rather than the top and how could I maintain the effect without visual tube supports? The resulting piece is solid and heavy, but also playful. The red and the blue, together with the solid grey base, feel more nostalgic than other pieces.
