Nina Lola Bachhuber's ssculptures can be read as three- dimensional representations of psychological states in which varying levels of abstraction and figuration are oscillating. By combining materials associated with the body such as hairs, fur, bones and horns with elements of the furnished interior, the work reveals an ambivalence of rationality and mystery. The inclusion of mirrors attributes an aspect of narcissism to these fetish-like objects. The work centers in a rather absurd, non-linear narrative: Mood, gender and behavior associations permeate the arrangement of the object (s) in space. A certain eeriness and uncanny humor undermine issues of color, material and scale, creating what could be called a kind of "surreal minimalism". The artist is working equally in drawing and sculpture. The drawings are never studies for sculptures, but instead are independent works on their own. What connects them to the three- dimensional work is their premise: the body at large, human and animal, and their fluctuation between figuration and abstraction.
