About The Artwork

This piece was inspired by my time spent working on the remote archipelago of St Kilda, off Western Scotland. The islands have seen visitors since as early as the bronze age, Christian and viking times. Today St Kilda is prized as a 'bucket list' destination. This is a hand -painted, designed glass work, displayed on a base of polished Scottish hardwood and antique-style coated steel. Highlights of the piece are the bold, graphic style of a Viking figurehead giving an imposing, striking, proud feel. The piece also adopts artwork abstracted from the only found artifact- a brooch left on the island by the vikings. The glass features smoky textures of royal blue and subtle lime, with dispersion of bubbles, and creation of intricate textures in the island skyline. Exquisitely detailed elm burr. Bronze age, viking, medieval Crofter, evangelist, prisoner Adventurer, sensation-seeker, romantic Carbon off-setter

I am a photographer and glass artist from the Isle of Skye in Scotland. I have always been inspired by the visual beauty and starkness of dramatic landscapes and the dynamic lighting displays that occur around the Atlantic. My photography work has taken me to remote environments including St Kilda, the Arctic and Antarctica, where the forms, structures and textures in rock and ice provide inspiration for designing my glass pieces. Glass-painting, design and sculpture intersect in the production of my work. I was drawn to working with glass because of the way it transmits light and colour. I like the juxtaposition of the hardness of glass with the expression of the painting process. Wood and metal are also a part of my visualisation process. After training as a photographer my images have won BIPP and FEP international awards.I have studied glass painting via short courses and mentoring with David Mola and Jeff Zimmer, and have exhibited my glass work in the Scottish Highlands and with the National Trust for Scotland. My work has been supported by Creative Scotland.
