Water, molecular formula H2O – is the most ubiquitous molecule in living organisms, representing about 60% of an adult human body and plays a key part of both the geography and life on earth. Yet still holds many mysteries as we don’t fully understand the structure of it in its liquid form.

This work is from a series in which Briony Marshall uses human figures to represent the atoms in molecules. This tells of how the same few atoms of biological life come together in diverse ways to produce very different molecules, each fairly simple, but with its own complex story to tell. It also tells of how people come together in society to create complex systems or situations.

Briony Marshall is a UK based sculptor and installation artist. With a background in Biochemistry she is interested in the idea of art practice as research. She fuses an intellectual/conceptual approach with an intuitive, materials inspired process to develop sculptures that investigate the natural world and man’s place in it. In 2012 she completed the Pangolin London Sculpture Residency which culminated in a solo show at Pangolin London in May 2013. She awarded a bursary by the Royal Society of Sculptors in 2008 and later went on to be elected as a sculptor member of its board of trustees. She is head of Professional Development at The Art Academy and was recently named as one of the ‘175 Face of Chemistry’ to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2015 she was shortlisted as one of the five finalist for the First@108 Public Art Award, and has recently completed a B.E.A.F. and Arts Council funded commission for a large rammed earth public artwork on Hengitsbury Head in Bournemouth. She is currently working on an exciting large scale commission for a School Science Building.
