This bronze sculpture is inspired by Minoan culture, which included a lot of feminine images and mythologies. It was also a maritime society in which the sea, shipping, and marine animals were integral. I also love the sea. The surface of the sculpture is embedded with graphic low relief images of Minoan, and maritime images. I hope the viewer appreciates the feminine form and water. Perhaps the graphic low relief images can inspire some curiosity about these kinds of seafaring cultures, where women played an important role. I often work in bronze and do my own casting, because i work at an art foundry and have a familiarity with the process which allows me a lot of expressive latitude. I am also a painter, so i love creating surface and color in my bronzes.

My name is Lisa Kenion. I was born in Charlotte, N.C. in 1959. I grew up in Charlotte, and then attended East Carolina University, earning a B.F.A. in 1982. I moved to Ohio in 1982, and in 1983 started graduate school at Kent State University. I earned an M.F.A. in painting in 1987, and included several sculptures in my thesis show, as well as painting. Soon after earning my M.F.A., i began working as a contractor, casting bronze, at Studio Foundry, a lost wax bronze casting facility. In 1988, three associates and I bought the foundry, and have been casting at and managing the foundry ever since. The themes in my work are the result of a great love of nature, a keen interest in art and cultural history, and an enduring interest in the intersection of art, science, philosophy and spirit.
