Winnie's China Dream Sculpture

In March 2018 China’s parliament passed a constitutional amendment removing presidential term limits, allowing president Xi Jinping to remain in office indefinitely. Of course the change of the law was designed and authorized by Xi himself who has almost the absolute political power. This piece is a gleeful play with the Chinese emperor’s crown and the Pooh bear connection with Xi. The artist wishes to highlight what he has done to China’s fragile democratic progress, that is to take a step backwards towards its imperial past. The pearl screen that shield the Pooh bear face from the direct view forces the viewers to move around to see what's behind it. I am not sure if the pearl screen's original design idea was to stop the subjects from seeing directly the emperor's face, but I found it useful in the context of an art work to create a sense of intrigue. The head and the plank part of the crown are of fired ceramic. The pearl screen beads are of plastic composite. The base is of wood. The gold coloring is of acrylic paint. The main sculpture is in two separable parts - the head and the crown that's to be placed on top. There is also a black pedestal 24inches tall built of plywood that shall be integral part of the art but the purchaser may choose not to use it and build another one instead.
