About The Artwork

YangZhou Dressing Gown < 扬州睡袍 > For thousands of years YangZhou was home to many beautiful women - a delicacy to be bought by the rich and chinese elite as mistresses. Many were poor and uneducated, and so were taught how to act and behave like a mistresses. In the early 1900’s, Guandong Province in the south of China was one of the first areas of China to prosper with the easing and commercializating of the reigon. This fueled the lost custom of having a mistress. Poor families first sold the women as mistresses, second the sons into factories. The naked breasts indicate her beauty but also her task to please him. She is a slave in mind and body. The dressing gown represents their playfulness in bed.
