Natanel Gluska lives and works in Zurich Singapore and Bangkok. He trained at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam graduating in 1989 since which time he has built up an international reputation for his playful, roughly hewn, artistic furniture pieces. He launched himself onto the design world in the late 90s courtesy of Milan’s SaloneSatellite, the offshoot of the Milan Furniture Fair, which showcases the work of emerging talents, in 2000" in focus" contemporary craft exhibitions in SOTHEBY'S, and in 2007 he was featured in their ten year retrospective, ‘A Dream Come True – SaloneSatellite Projects: from Inception to Production’. The exhibition highlighted the success of designers who have transformed their concepts and prototypes into commercial reality. 10-31 december . exhibition . in the "Black world Festival" in Dakar Senegal. Last exhibithion: nature en kit (nature in kit form) MUDAC MUSEUM www.mudac.ch . Gluska’s furniture is unique, with every item a one-off. He takes his inspiration from the world around him and from a series of hand-drawn sketches he attacks a virgin tree stump with a chainsaw and, in one piece, fashions from it a hybrid of sculpture and functional item. Inhibitions, whether creative or market-led, are shed allowing his work to show a freedom of expression missing in mass-produced design. The fact that he works in wood rather than any other massive material allows his craftsmanship to prevail and prevents his work slipping into gimmickry or parody. Gluska underlines the importance on the culture of design of individuals who still make by hand and whose small but significant business initiatives have found noteworthy success. Over the last decade Gluska’s work has secured a niche market and is collected worldwide with clients including Ian Schrager, Philippe Starck, Karl Lagerfeld, Donna Karen and the famous Swiss department store, Globus. Gluska has been published widely in the international design media and he has exhibited both solely and in group shows; most recently at S.A.C. Subhashok The Arts Centre Bangkok with woodcut print and wood objects , the Kortrijk Biennale, ‘Design for Europe’ and at DesignMiami/Basel in Basel for `Contrast Gallery`from Shangai.
