Born in Liege (Belgium) in 1967 Laurent Hamels (ROL) resides and works in Paris and Nantes ROL works in a style that fuses street art, art brut, neo expressionism, free figuration and early arts. He is also inspired by Jean Michel Basquiat, Jean Marc Calvet, Bernard Buffet and Robert Combas. Laurent Hamels draws his creative energy from these fears, his childhood, his doubts and his experience. His job is introspection and therapy; his work is a true liberation. He works compulsively and automatically. We find in these works symbols. His paintings and collages are mainly figurative compositions overlapping primitive and neo-expressionist modernism. In these works, we find a mix of emotions, personal experiences and symbols. Each work cultivates an ambiguity, a mystery, an enigma that can be interpreted differently by each one and find his own Autodidact story, he develops his own technique through an experimental approach and the remixing of materials. This work is done in a mixing technique in a completely instinctive and organic way. His paintings and collages are mostly figurative compositions straddling primitive modernism and neo-expressionism.
