Art Description

Sculpture: Acrylic, Woodcut and Wood on Wood and Plastic.

The Ascension series is a body of work that expresses my childhood memories of Iran-Iraq war. The flying to the sky is a metaphor of journey through the spiritual path, a physical manifestation of the stages one must undergo to reach god, likewise ending in death. Seeing Iraqi and Iranian fighter planes in the sky and hearing the warning sirens was my first experience with stress. The possibility that at any moment my life could be ended by these steel birds filled me with constant terror. These steel birds were made by humankind and inspired by nature to make the dream of flying come true, but now they were bombing my city and destroying everything. For the Ascension series, the motif is the warplane. It becomes a metaphor for the complexity of the Middle Eastern conflict, both in the greater societal and cultural ramifications.
