Underpinned by conceptual ideologies, my art practice investigates ideas surrounding travel and journey. Based on a personal narrative, the medium of text and photography is employed to map out the experience derived when travelling on a predetermined route. By creating text based on memory and geographical locations, the viewer is led to question my personal depiction of the landscape; in relation to the history of artists who focus on this topic. Mainly influenced by artists such as Hamish Fulton and Richard Long, my work explores the idea of the artist travelling as a means of producing art. Based on this my work demonstrates the way the artist is a traveller, but through conventional means of travel such as a car. This is because I wish to show how cars have become a common means of travel; where it no longer takes days to go from city to city. Despite this fast way of travelling, we perhaps learn less about our environment, as the speed of a car means we travel across more ground at a quicker pace. Consequently we take in less information as we only focus on certain viewpoints. My work demonstrates this through the use of photography, in which I map out my journey using a camera mounted within my car. The photographs therefore demonstrate only one view point, giving a limited idea of the surrounding areas to viewer. This use of a car to map a journey also draws links with Google Maps. This is because Google maps now map out a network of streets through the use of a camera mounted upon a car. Alongside the use of photography, text is used as a descriptive tool, in which the viewer is left to analyse and question the purpose of a journey. This therefore leaves the work open to interpretation, varying dependent of the viewer and their own experiences regarding travelling.
