About The Artwork

In the spring of 2018, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China announced an amendment of the seventy-ninth constitution concerning the re-election of the President of the State. This revision has brought about the same spiritual impact on Chinese political scholars, and even Chinese citizens, as the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. This unexpected act of the supreme ruler means the advent of an era of dictatorship. Ubiquitous surveillance, socialist declarations and a Bio-identification prototype system based on face recognition have exacerbated the nation’s fear of red politics. However, what the Chinese citizens have to face is not only the government’s challenge to personal privacy but also the suppression of human rights. In a culture dominated by chauvinism and communism, it is difficult for Chinese women to organize a movement against sexism and workplace discrimination. At present, the liabilities of the middle class in China and the number of people at the bottom of the society are increasing at an unprecedented rate. In such society with a growing number of poor people, social media has been publicizing the story that the poor are known as heroes for their frugality and controlling the voices of resistance from all parts of society. The China-United States trade dispute is becoming increasingly acute, the huge bubble of real estate is facing collapse, and countless workers are facing unemployment. Those crises reduced young people, who have just joined the society and are supposed to drive the social and economic forces, to slaves to survive and debt repayment. They have no right to choose their scopes of life that is suitable and brings them pleasure but to do work that is quite uncongenial to them for the necessity of survival. Under such circumstances, who is entitled to talk about the future? “I was born red” as a work in red politics, is a beginning for the artist as a Chinese citizen to break the social silence.
