About The Artwork

Engrossed in her own sophistication, Lady Delicate is seemingly oblivious to the world around her. It is only through the probing glances of Lord Bunburry that she is able to unveil her dainty facade, exposing the true vulnerability underneath. (see Lord Bunbury video installation) Lord Bunbury and Lady Delicate is a silent, experimental, two channel short film about love, desire and the quest for companionship. Set in the 18th Century English countryside, Bunbury and Delicate is inspired by Rococo painter, Thomas Gainsborough, who was known for his portraiture and landscape paintings, and who often subversively mocked the pretense and arrogance of the subject of his portraits. This piece is inspired in particular by Gainsborough's famous portrait, 'Mr. and Mrs. Andrews'. To capture the spirit of this sensuous and playful period, endless hours were spent searching for the right costumes, the right location, even the right bench for Delicate to sit on. In the film, Bunbury and Delicate are each frozen in time in separate, perpetual, moving portraits (though they are entirely unaware that they are subjects under surveillance by the viewer). Because they are oblivious to the fact that our watchful eye is beholding them, each character candidly reveals their idiosyncratic pretense and vulnerability. Eventually, the two characters discover each other and begin to flirt between their portraits. This flirtation reaches a climax when Bunbury dares to actually leave his portrait in his attempt to pursue Delicate in hers. Delightfulness, then disappointment ensues for both parties involved.

Statement Much of my work originates from probing my past in order to assess my present identity. I was an only child, and the solitude caused me to construct fantastical narratives in my mind. Now, as an adult and an artist, I am reinventing the dark and fantastical actions that I would never dare act out as a child. In many of my works, I depict characters who are longing for sexual and psychological interaction, but various barriers prevent them from engaging with one another. They remain perpetually isolated, vulnerable, longing for connection. Their elusive search, in fact, mirrors my own. In my work, I have also explored the nature of relationships and the perpetual shifting dynamics between people and their various roles. I am fascinated by how these roles inform each other and how they are never static in nature, but rather constantly subject to change as they evolve. As an artist, I have examined roles and ideas from the perspective of a child. Now, as a parent, I am able to see myself in the role of my own mother, gaining a better understanding of how these cycles come together, full circle.
