Damián Montes Martínez is a Spanish painter and sculptor, born in La Rápita, Spain, in 1956. His initial work had a strong political component, based on the defense of the human rights and the social movements during the last years of the Spanish dictatorship. At the age of 25, he moved to Barcelona, where his work became more philosophical, through the mixture of techniques and textures, influenced by expressionism.
His work is inspired by daily life objects, and landscapes around him, particularly in the Ebro Delta region, where he is from. Damián continues creating sculptures of iron and wood, engravings and mixed media paintings. Using recycled materials, he creates pieces with new meaning, by combining textures and colours.
He holds a BA in Philosophy and a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona. He has worked as a professor of Aesthetics at the Theater Institute of Barcelona and as an art professor at Consell de Cent Institute, in Barcelona, where he was the director during 10 years. Damián has also designed stage sets, posters and jewelry, as well as numerous didactic proposals for teaching the arts and philosophy.
