About Dawn Chandler
First, about my work : Imagine a landscape through which you’ve traveled. Recall the different characteristics—the turns in the trail or road; the rise and fall of a distant ridge-line; shifting sunlight and shade; clouds building and storms moving in and out; the a riot of springtime flowers or drifting autumn leaves; a dark wall of deeply forested evergreens; the verticality of canyon walls; water reflections; the soft tones of dusk and dark shadows of night; the calligraphic movements of birds…. Rarely when we recall a journey across the land, is our memory in sharp focus. Rather, our memories become sequence of impressions—a collage of the vistas, colors, textures and shapes that we encountered along our journey’s path. Dawn Chandler’s paintings are a celebration of these impressions of journeying across the land. By merging traditional landscape imagery with fragments of text and abstract elements, Chander’s “textual landscapes” evoke experience of land and place in a way that invites the viewer to pause and consider. More than ‘nature studies’ or simple abstractions of the landscape, for Chandler these paintings are deeper expressions of not only journeys in the outdoors, but the passage of time and transience of life. Paint spatters and swirls suggest the movements of birds, often great flocks of them. Vertical lines divide the space into passageways and chapters of time. Fragments of words — most recently from her own journals — emerge in a sort of ghost poetry, further inviting the viewer to linger and reflect. Mountain and mesa ranges, distant horizons and the big sky of the American west especially find expression in Chandler’s textual landscapes. In her most recent of these paintings, she shares her impressions of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge—a miracle of land, sky and water in the midst of the New Mexico desert. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
