Monica Dengo is an artist, calligrapher and designer. She has taught in many institutions, including the Academy of Art University in San Francisco Usa, and in Italy, the Libera Università di Bolzano, the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, the Fondazione Musei Civici Veneziani and the ISIA, Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche in Urbino and in Faenza. She has also been teaching for cultural organizations in Japan, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Canada, Russia and United States. Her collaboration with the Centro Internazionale Arti Calligrafiche, a non-profit association, has lead to the development of a three years long calligraphy course in Venice. Her work has been exhibited in many parts of the world and in 2014 she was awarded best international artist at the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial.
Monica has also given special attention to the teaching of handwriting to children, as you can read in the website scritturacorsiva.it. Her manual Pick Up Your Pen has been published in Canada, France, Italy and Estonia and her new book Lascia il Segno, dedicated to handwriting as an expression of human creativity has been published in Italy with Cart’Armata Edizioni in 2017 and in Switzerland with Niggli Verga in 2020.

Monica began the study of graphic design in Venice, Italy and England.
In London she studied calligraphy and bookbinding at the Roehampton Institute (1991-1992) with Gaynor Goffe and Ewan Clayton. In 1993 she moved to San Francisco (California) and spent three years studying indi- pendently full time manuscript production techniques, illumination, de- sign and history of lettering with Thomas Ingmire. She also studied figure drawing with Eleanor Dickinson. The San Franscisco Art Institute Library, the Correr Museum and Marciana libraries in Venice (Italy) were also a part in her independent studies. In 2012 she was artist-in-residence for two month at the Emily Harvey Foundation in Venice.
