Elaine Smith

I’m driven by the pure joy of being creative. My paintings are images of an expression of the world around me and are inspired by the amazing natural landscape wherever I am, whether it’s kayaking, hiking or cycling or just simply walking in my neighbourhood. I am passionate about the abstract process and feel that it allows the true artist in me to apply paint in a personal and intimate way. For me creating art is an act that invites the artist and the viewer to create meaning and story within themselves.

I love to engage in conversations with people about my art and my process, understanding that with abstracted images people love to try and make sense of the work. Viewing art is also a creative act and I find it fascinating and rewarding to hear people’s stories and interpretations about my work. I see this as an essential part of my creativity.

Mostly self taught with an art practice of over 30 years.
