Julie Anderson Mathias (Julie A.M.) is an American multi-disciplinary artist. She’s also an interior architect and alum of Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill. With over 25 years of experience, Julie has built her career around providing elegant and inspired design solutions to a broad client base, from New York to London.
Among her various accolades, Julie is a recipient of an American Institute of Architecture award as the designer for the "Kids on the Fly" Exhibition, a permanent installation in Chicago's O’Hare International Airport.
Artist statement:
"I paint because I have a deep-rooted desire to bring color into spaces. My background is in architecture. I first became exposed to Abstract Expressionism while a student in upstate New York in the 1970s.
After graduation, I was a mural painter. I painted large scale murals on the sides of buildings, often in depressed cityscapes.
Even though my paintings are abstract, they have an underlying structure and grid. I meticulously plan each painting on canvas maquettes.
Being in architecture, to me color is critical. The more I manipulate paint, the more I learn about color. And there is still much to be revealed. - Julie"
