Michal Nachmany is a NYC-based artist and educator. She grew up in Jerusalem and her art is influenced by colors of streets and markets, and by an awareness of the past as a foundation of the present. Today she creates art in a Harlem studio. A central theme of Nachmany's work, inspired by her immigrant experience, is that 'every person and every object has a journey.' Her work focuses on ways memories of personal and cultural journeys are captured through found, daily-use objects. Nachmany's mixed media technique includes collage, printmaking, and sculptural installation. She uses collage as a rich medium to tell stories about memories evoked by objects depicted in the art. Nachmany's work has been exhibited in solo shows in community centers in New York City and New York State, and internationally in Taipei, Taiwan and Krakow, Poland. Nachmany also does commission work, such as her recent work for Columbia University celebrating the university's newly opened Manhattanville Urban Campus; ten of her art pieces are now on display in Columbia's Faculty House.
