Sam Buckland

SAM BUCKLAND has maintained a regular arts practice since childhood, he won a Melbourne University Art Prize while a student there in 1993 and has enjoyed a successful career in the film industry in London, LA and Australia since. While he hasn’t had a large number of exhibitions, he has sold a great deal of work privately and on commission. His work is found in private collections in London, Los Angeles, Sydney and Melbourne, and he has sold 6 large works this year.

Sam’s images are largely automatic, and follow the tradition of André Breton and André Masson, in arising from the unconscious. He begins with no preconceived subject or composition in mind, letting the lines lead him across the paper without conscious control. He then builds on these lines, repeating and strengthening them consciously, creating depth and structure, resulting in a complex and unique geometric arrangement of forms that is present in all his work. Sam works is largely paint, or coloured gels, on paper or board.

Honours degree in Philosophy, Majoring in aesthetics and philosophy of art.
