My work explore the visualization of the invisible. The biological cell is my subject, understood as an unseen reality of one's own being. I draw and record a cell image everyday to capture the character of my constantly changing biological self.
What am I a composite of? What binds us into a singular entity, and what allows us to become many?
My practice begins with an inquiry into the self—specifically, the cells that constitute my existence. Through this perspective, I observe and express the relationships between matter and life, mind and behavior.
Cells function as a medium through which I reinterpret existence. Their forms and movements capture my attention, drawing me into a state of focused observation. The entity I call “myself” witnesses the phenomena before me, affirming life in the present moment. As I breathe, the cells within me follow their own cycles, guiding and sustaining my being.
I find the essence of my work in the words of William Blake: “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.”

Shirley Sehee KIM is a media artist and educator based in South Korea. She is currently a full-time professor in the Department of the Division of Media Arts at Baekseok Arts University.
She holds a Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies from Chung-Ang University’s Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science and Art, Multimedia & Film. She also earned an M.A in Fine Art. from the University of Kent (UK), and a Master’s degree in Animation Production from the same graduate school at Chung-Ang University.
She received her B.F.A. in Western Painting from Ewha Womans University. Her academic and artistic practice spans media art, animation, and the intersection of generative systems and visual culture.
