Ambiguous narratives invite the audience to discover their own imagined stories from the scenarios suggested on the painted canvas. While a painting may allude to a particular drama, it is left open to interpretation, and the viewer is welcomed to read the story as they experience it.
Inspired by the genre of magical realism, David Symons creates paintings that co-exist in the space between the real and magical. By employing a rich and loosely painted palette of colours, a balance between realistic depiction and stylistic technique, and compositions that describe a moment of drama frozen in time, each painting can belong to a myriad number of possible stories that can be both familiar and fantastical.
After graduating with a BAHons in Fine Art, David Symons works in art education, and is currently based in Chengdu, China where he teaches Art and Design in international school education. In his studio practice, while working mainly with painting and drawing media, he also works with digital art-making processes, creating digitally artworks from photographs as reference images for his paintings.
