Joel Rocha started his career as a photographer in the early 80s, in Curitiba, south of Brazil. The first decade of work was dedicated mostly to photojournalism, mainly for Veja magazine. As an independent photographer, Joel worked in the editorial market as well as with business photography. On the side, he always developed artistic work, which resulted in different exhibitions throughout the years, with themes like temporality and the poetic of quotidian life. Nowadays, he is dedicated almost entirely to personal and artistic photography, as the ones that can be seen here.
Education/ Professional Training – Photography Course with Geraldo Magela in Curitiba Creativity Center (1983); Zone System course at the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba (1988); Laboratory Course in B/W on the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba (1989); Photography Course - Retouching B/W at the International Biennal of Curitiba (1996); Film Photography course in Film and Video Festival of Curitiba (1997); Studio Lighting in course with Mario Espinoza at the International Biennal of Curitiba (1998); Graduated in Photography at the Positivo University (2012).
Solo Exhibitions
PICTORIAL URBANO – URBAN PICTORIAL (1995): First solo exhibition at Cultural Foundation of Curitiba - Brazil, set of photographs that explores graphics, shapes and colors of streets of Curitiba, and artistic expression possibilities of urban space.
TEMPO E CONTRATEMPO – TIME AND SETBACK (2001/2002): Exposed in the Cultural Beto Batata in Curitiba, and the Museum of Image and Sound in Florianópolis, was composed of thirty black and white images that portrayed man's relationship with time and space in urban centers.
PICTORIAL URBANO II – URBAN PICTORIAL II (2009): Continuing the work in 1995, the new series of thirty images proposes reinvestigating the urban space, to explore colors and shapes of everyday life of Curitiba.
