people describe me as artist and educator who creates painting like prints, sometimes with words in 3D installation. She describes herself as a painting writer and her penname "Gukzik" means "collecting colours".
I am very much fond of my own language, cantonese chinese. i like to recite poetry of the tang dynasty, and many times get inspired from the words to build up my images in visuals. i am very much fond of eating in a simple way, it is not chinese but a lot of mix and match. i like to eat good food by good hands. i am in fact the good hands too. i think good cooking is like good art, it should be full of good ideas, thoughts, explorations and tastes. i love, care for life, making good food is like making a good life for oneself. good food is love itself, for all food comes from the same source - love. when they are good, they are nature's blessings.
i am myself an artwork of my own. when i do art work i tend to work towards directions that would allow more than one possibility in the making, of a picture or a scenario. sometimes they are paradox in pairs, sometimes they are contradiction in between each other, sometimes they are never ending stories, abstract thoughts like a body wearing clothes visible in many for...
1990 MA (distinction) RCA Royal College of Art, London, UK. Born and raised in Hong Kong. In her early years trained in Canada, OCAD. She uses modern printing machines to do her art, such as the offset printer, photocopier, fax machine and digital inkjet. She also juxtaposes images and words, both in Chinese and English to create 2D images, occasionally collaborated with 3D installations .
Gukzik has exhibited in the UK, USA, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, China and Hong Kong. There are private and public collections of hers worldwide.
