Carved from a single piece of Carrara marble, "marble grace" marks the artist’s transition from architectural space to intimate form. Based in Berlin, Alva Jung is a sculptor and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the tension between stillness and struggle, intimacy and abstraction. With a background in architecture and formative experiences at the studios of Herzog & de Meuron and Olafur Eliasson, her work draws from spatial thinking, material sensitivity, and a deep engagement with light, body, and presence. A turning point came in Carrara, Italy, where she encountered marble not as a monument to permanence, but as something deeply sensual, wounded, and alive. There, she began carving — translating the contours of the female nude into abstract, weight-bearing forms that carry both grace and gravity. Her work is a meditation on slowness and tranquility, but also on pain and the quiet endurance required to overcome it. Whether through sculpture, drawing, or process-led experimentation, her pieces reveal a restrained emotional depth — always returning to the body as both a source of vulnerability and strength. Each form is made with time, and meant to hold it.
