Salóme Van Rooyen

I was born in 1962 in South Africa and live in Cape Town. I earned my Bachelor of Visual Arts at UNISA (the University of SouthAfrica). I have participated in several shows in Cape Town.

My fascination with depth psychology and the workings of the subconscious mind finds expression in the surreal elements in my work. My focus is on the figurative as representation of inner awareness.

I always listen to music while working, as it helps me to transcend the urge to controll the outcome. My mark-making is spontaneous and expressive and I allow chance to play a role in the direction I go.

My creative process involves finding images (from different sources) that resonate with me on a mostly subconscious level and then creating a new image through juxtaposition. This I then transfer to canvas/paper and translate into a painting or drawing.
