Leejay Mintz

Leejay has that rare artistic gift of a truly unique perspective, having a form of Synesthesia, which is an uncommon neurological phenomenon which causes one's sensory experiences to interact. He actually experiences light and sound simultaneously, hearing music in light, and seeing colour in sound.

This naturally gives his art a visual vocabulary that is uniquely his own, and his sublime compositions are the visual expression of this experience. Being evocative of reflected light, and seeming to vibrate with color and luminosity, they are landscapes comprised of memories and sensory impressions perceived through this very personal perspective. His very fluid compositions belie their underlying structural precision: every stroke, every color choice or juxtaposition has been carefully considered beforehand. This artistic control results in canvases that are intensely radiating, appearing at times alive with electrical energy. He derives inspiration from his experience of the movement and shapes found in nature, which he translates into compositions reflecting that energy on canvas.

He has pursued this unique artistic vision since childhood, being admitted to the Art Students League of New York at the age of nine, and later attending the School of Visual Arts, Fashion Institute of Technology, and Parson’s School of Design in New York, He has continued to explore a variety of techniques and media, from painting and light refracting sculpture, to imprinting his compositions on textiles and clothing.
