When materials do not lend themselves to society's contemporary plans, Lisa Tilley appropriates and refurbishes them, developing new products which are fashionable and retro in appearance yet compliant with the demands of modern day living. uoldbag's rustic simplicity belies a design of contemporary sophistication.
Lisa Tilley, a trained textile designer, founded uoldbag! in 2009. Her workshop has been based in Bedford since 2007. The ethos is 'vintage' and reused: old magazines, illustrations, photographs vintage suitcases, bags and luggage and reclaimed materials are utilised into 'new' products.
Inspired by vintage materials, illustrations and photographs each bag is skillfully produced. Some include imagery that has been painstakingly cut out and applied using the art of decoupage, others hand embroidery that has been carefully sewn over beautiful and delicate crochet patterned paper. All are made with materials which have had a previous life: magazines, newspapers and home furnishings such as retro print curtains and pillow cases displaying beautiful forestry hand embroidered scenes. Even tea cosie's featuring a myriad of animals such as "˜ginger cats' are made into evening clutch bags.
