Chiemi Nobata is a contemporary Japanese artist who is living and working in Switzerland since 2025.

She creates abstract paintings using traditional Japanese materials such as Sumi ink and Washi paper. Her practice is driven by a deep curiosity about art materials and their potential for transformation. Working without preliminary sketches, she allows the materials to interact freely, resulting in organic and unpredictable forms. Her process explores themes of transformation and impermanence, focusing on the quiet presence and resonance of materials. She seeks to visualise philosophical ideas, states of thought and emotion that have no physical form, and abstract concepts through the medium of abstract painting, inviting viewers to experience new perceptions and moments of introspection.

She has exhibited in Japan, South Korea and Europe, was a finalist for the YICCA Prize in Venice in 2023 and 「Inner Thoughts」is in the permanent collection of the Museo d’Arte di Chianciano Terme.
