Raphael Wendt

Painting is just another way of thinking visually. After two decades shaping the visual language of publications like AD Architectural Digest, SZ Magazin and Gestalten, the same instincts that drive great design drive these paintings: composition, tension, the weight of a form in space.
These works are abstract because abstraction leaves space – for your own reading, your own mood, your own memory. The forms suggest without stating, hint without explaining. Familiar enough to trigger associations, strange enough to resist them. Inspired by modernist and brutalist architecture, midcentury sculpture and the shapes of nature, and by jazz: spontaneous, yet considered. Precise, yet open. Corbusier, Perriand, Gray, Noguchi, Nakashima, Lynch – artists who never saw a useful boundary between disciplines. That's the inspiration where these paintings come from.

Ludwig Raphael Wendt studied graphic design and visual communication in Freiburg, Germany, graduating in 1998. He went on to work for over two decades as Art Director for leading international publications and brands, including AD Architectural Digest Germany, SZ Magazin and Gestalten. He lives and works in Berlin.

Raphael Wendt has been presenting his artistic work publicly since 2024. His works have attracted the attention of collectors in Europe and the Middle East. Exhibitions and art fair participations are in planning.
