For more than 25 years, I’ve been exploring themes and ideas that demonstrate we all have more in common than we sometimes think.
My approach to art (and life) is informed by the principle of ‘“Informed Simplicity’. There’s a quote by Einstein that I think describes it best “ Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”
In my body of work, that means providing enough visual information to convey an idea or feeling, while leaving room for you - the viewer, to imagine yourself being represented in the work.
Throughout my body of work is a spirit of joy and a sense of possibility.
I’m a self-taught artist.
I grew up on a twenty-acre farm in California’s Central Valley. There weren’t any galleries or museums and no art classes to speak of. So, my introduction to sculpture came through library books about Greek sculpture. I was completely entranced to learn that individuals could transform raw material into objects that powerfully convey universal truths about the human experience.
Throughout my early artistic development, I studied the works of artists like Julio Gonzalez (a contemporary of Picasso), Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Isamu Noguchi. While their work is stylistically quite different from one another, each body of work expresses something I’ve come to understand as “informed simplicity”. This idea continues to guide my work today. Not just in the form my sculpture takes, but in the themes I choose to explore.
While my formal education is in I applied economics, I'm an autodidact when it comes to art. I attribute this to my mother who set a very simple, very effective model for me to follow - figure out what you want to do and get about the business of doing it. It’s a path I continue to follow.
